Reduce RAM Usage When Firefox Is Minimized

When you use the computer, probably running many software, each of them needs ram memory. RAM is very important , because the faster the frequency of the RAM the faster the software runs. In this tutorial we will move Firefox to your hard drive when you minimize it. When we do that, firefox will take up much less ram memory.
Open a new tab and type in about:config in the address bar. After this will appear warning message, click I´ll be careful, I promise !. In about:config settings right click anywhere and selectNew-> Boolean, as shown below

Windows Registry Files and Where to Find Them

To locate your Windows Registry files you will need to know which Windows platform you have. There are currently only two Windows platforms that all versions of Windows are built on. They are both named after the earliest version of each platform.
Windows XP, 2000, 2003 and Vista are all newer versions of the Windows NT platform. They all use the NT Kernel32.dll, although the Kernel32.dll has been updated / modified for each Windows operating system.
Windows 95, 98, 98 SE, and ME use the Windows 95 Kernel32.dll and are all part of theWindows 95 platform. Here again, the Kernel32.dll has been updated / modified for each new operating system.
The Registry files cannot be read from a DOS prompt, or the Recovery Console, or even a text editor in Windows. These files are databases, and only RegEdit, Regedit32 and the Kernel32 can read them. To read them in Windows enter RegEdit in the Run window at the Start button.

Windows 95 platform

In Windows 95, 98, and 98 SE there are only two Registry files, System.dat and User.dat. In Windows ME there are three Registry files, Classes.dat, System.dat and User.dat. The Registry files are located in your Windows folder (C:\Windows). The User.dat file for users not currently logged on are in the Windows\ Profile\ folder. They all have Hidden, System, and Read Only attributes. In order to see them you will need to enable the Windows Explorer to view the hidden files.
Microsoft learned that if the Registry Files get to large, Windows could not load them. So for Windows ME Microsoft cut System.dat into two files; Classes.dat and System.dat. This new file was added in order to allow the Registry to be greater than 11 megs. In Windows 98, Windows would report the inability to load a Registry file that is greater than 11 megs, in Windows 95 the limit is 8 megs.
The function of each file is different. System.dat stores all the information about software, hardware, security, default Windows settings, and how Windows will perform. User.dat stores all settings that each user selects; these settings will override settings stored in the System.dat file.
Classes.dat, used only on Windows ME, is the Registry Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes. Which is the same Key previously stored on the earlier versions of Windows in the System.dat file.
Each file has a backup made by Windows. Windows 95 creates a backup, System.da0 (da zero) and User.da0, located in the Windows folder on each reboot that is not in Safe Mode. Windows 98,98 SE, and ME creates a backup once a day of the Registry files, using ScanregW.exe If you reboot every day. Scanregw only backups on a reboot, unless you manually start Scanregw and tell it to backup.
Scanregw backs up the Registry files to a cabinet file and stores them in the Windows\Sysbckup folder. It will store up to 5 different copies, RB000.cab to RB005.cab. And a corrupt Registry can go undetected for 5 days easily. This is why a good Registry backup tool is so important.
Windows also makes one backup copy of the Registry upon the installation of Windows and stores it in the root (C:\). It does not make a copy of the User.dat file. This copy of the Registry is named System.1st and if you have Windows ME you will also find Classes.1st there.

Windows NT platform

In Windows XP, 2000, and 2003 there are several Registry files. These files are named without a file extension and are stored in the Windows\System32\Config folder. These files are named Software, System, SAM, Security, Default, and UserDiff. There is one more Registry file and it does have a file extension, NTuser.dat. In Windows XP, 2000 and 2003. NTuser.dat is stored in the users folder under the Documents and Settings folder. Each user has their own NTuser.dat file. The NTuser.dat file stores all settings that each user selects; these settings will override settings stored in the System file.
The function of each file is different. Security stores information about security. The SAM file stores information about the Security Accounts Manager service. Neither of these two files, Security and SAM, are viewable in RegEdit, unless you reset the permissions. System stores all the information about hardware. Software stores information about your software and how Windows will perform and the default Windows settings. The Default file, stores all the default user settings, the NTuser.dat file overrides the default user settings. The UserDiff file stores information about the corresponding SubKeys in the HKEY_USERS Hive for each registered user.
Each of these Registry files has its own backup which is made during the Windows installation. They are never updated. They are located in the
Windows\System32\Config folder, and have a file extension of sav. These file are created at the end of the text base part of the Windows installation, before the graphic part begins. Installing these sav Registry files will reset Windows to the point of finishing the Windows installation. These files will only be updated if you perform a Windows repair by using the R option during a Windows reinstall.
There is also another set of Registry files save to Windows\Repair. These are same as the sav file. Except they will never be updated. If you use these files you will reboot back into Windows to the point, "Windows is Now Setting Up" during a Windows installation. Your software setting and user setting are all gone. There are no users yet in these files .
On Windows XP, Windows also creates a current backup of the Registry each time System Restore creates a restore point. These Registry files are located in the System Restore Information folder on the same drive as Windows is installed. However, the System Restore only seems to work if the Registry is not damaged or corrupted. It just seems like it never works when you really need it.
For security reasons, the Kernel32.dll protects these files from being copied or altered without the use of the Kernel32.dll. You cannot manually make backups, and you cannot change some of the Keys' information.
To make a backup of the Registry you will need to use either a third party backup tool or Windows Backup. If you use the Windows Backup tool you need to make a System State backup to backup the Registry.

Things you didn’t know VLC media player can do

For most people, VLC is the favorite media player because it plays everything they throw at it without hiccups. No hunting for codec. But VLC can do a lot of other things as well. Find out how many of these listed below you knew, and how many you did not.
1. Rip DVDs: VLC includes a basic DVD ripper. You probably would never use it when there are better DVD rippers available, but it helps to know that you can in fact, get a decent quality DVD rip with VLC. To rip a movie follow these steps:
  • Go to the Media menu and choose Convert/Save. Click on the Disc tab.
  • Here you can adjust the Starting Position and rip only specific titles or chapters.
  • Enter file name making sure to end with .MPG, and start ripping.
  • Click Save.
2. Record videos: With the new VLC, you can record videos during playback. The record button is hidden by default. To see it, click on View>Advanced Control. The record button will now appear. Clicking on the button while playing a movie or video will start recording. Clicking again will stop recording.
vlc-record
3. Play RAR files: Do you know VLC can play videos zipped inside RAR files? They play like normal video files and you can even use the seek bar. If the RAR file is split into several files, no problem. Just load the first part (.part001.rar ) and it will automatically take the rest of the parts and play the whole file.
4. Play in ASCII mode: VLC media player has an amusing ability, to playback movies in ASCII art. To enable ASCII mode, open VLC media player and click on Tools>Preferences. Open the section “Video” section and under “Output” select “Color ASCII art video output” from the drop down menu. Save it. Now play any video file to enjoy the ASCII art.
vlc-ascii2
5. Listen to online radio: VLC includes hundreds of Shoutcast radio stations. You just need to enable it through Media>Services Discovery>Shoutcast radio listings. Now, open the Playlist and browse through the stations.
vlc-shoutcast
6. Convert Audio and Video formats: In VLC you can convert video and audio files from one format to another. Several different formats are supported like MP4, WMV, AVI, OGG, MP3 etc. To access the converter:
  • Go to Media>Convert/Save.
  • Load the file you want to convert using the Add button and click Convert.
  • Now choose the output format and output file location.
    vlc-convert
7. Download YouTube and other online videos: First grab the URL of the YouTube video page. Now click on Media>Open Network stream. Paste the URL and click Play.
Once VLC starts streaming the video, click Tools>Codec Information and at the bottom of the window you will see a Location box. Copy the URL and paste it on your browser’s address bar. The browser will now download the file which you can save it to your hard disk. Alternatively, you can record the video.

How to use a fake webcam video on Chatroulette

Lately a website called Chatroulette is creating a lot of buzz in the blogosphere, and unless you just emerged from under a rock you have probably heard and used it too. Those who are truly clueless, here is an extract from Wikipedia:
Chatroulette is a website which pairs random strangers for webcam-based conversations. Visitors to the website randomly begin an online stranger chat (video and text) with another visitor. At any point, either user may leave the current chat by initiating another random connection.
chatroulette
When you go to Chatroulette (could be NSFW, be warned) you face a random stranger on webcam and he faces you through your webcam. A webcam is essential to chatting on Chatroulette. What if you don’t have a webcam or you don’t want to show yourself to random people on the Internet? Can you use Chatroulette without a webcam? Of course you can, thanks to virtual webcam software.
Using a virtual webcam software you can use a pre-recorded webcam video, or any video for the matter, and get into Chatroulette. This is how to do it.

What you need

  1. Manycam – this is a free software.
  2. A video, preferably a chat video. You can find one by searching on YouTube, but don’t use Jonas Brothers videos; those are too common on Chatroulette now. You can use a photo but that would also give you away, unless you just want to be a troll. We will come to that later.

Setting up Manycam

  1. After you have downloaded and installed Manycam, run the program.
  2. Click on the Sources tab and then click on Movies.
  3. Click “Open a new file” under “Recent files” and load the video you want to use. Manycam supports AVI, MPEG and WMV. If you have downloaded a video from YouTube in the FLV format, convert to any one of the supported formats using Oxelon Media Converter.

    manycam
  4. Click on the Play button and turn on the Loop video feature.
  5. There is one more thing to do and that is remove the Manycam logo from the bottom of the video. To do this click on “Effects” tab, and then click on “Text over video”. Now uncheck the “Show Manycam logo” option.

    manycam-logo
  6. You are now set. Just go to Chatroulette and start chatting.

Use talking pictures on Chatroulette

To add more fun you can use a talking picture on Chatroulette. To make your pictures talk and create a video out of it you will require a screen casting software like CamStudio or Camtasia.
  1. Go to this page, and click on “Create my Actor”.
  2. Upload an image of the character you want to make it talk. It can be a person or an animal.
  3. Drag the numbered feature points for the eyes and mouth using the example image on the left for reference.
    talking-picture
  4. Once you are done, click on Let’s Talk.
Since the website does not give you an option to save the talking picture into a video, we will have to use a screen casting software to do it. It’s pretty easy to use these. Simple mark the region on the screen around the image and record that region as a video. Here is my result.
Now load this video on Manycam and have fun on Chatroulette. See you there.

How to find drivers for Unknown Devices

Usually, when you buy any hardware the drivers come along with it on a disc. If you lose the driver disc you can always download the necessary drivers from the manufacturer's website. But what do you do when you are not sure of the manufacturer of the hardware? This is quite a possible situation and blogger Vinod Chandramouli provides an excellent trick to deal with it.
Every device has a Vendor and Device id associated with it. If you can find this ID, you can find the manufacturer. In Windows it's easy to find the vendor and device id.
  1. Open Device Manager (Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager)
  2. The hardware whose drivers are missing will appear as Unknown device, so it's easier to locate the device.
  3. Right click on the unknown device and click on Properties.
  4. Under the Properties window click on Details tab and select Device Instance Id from the drop down box.
  5. You should see a code similar to this

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27DC&SUBSYS_30868086
    &REV_01\4&1E46F438&0&40F0

  6. The portion of the code highlighted in RED is the Vendor ID and the portion highlighted in GREENis the Device ID. In this example:

    Vendor ID = 8086
    Device ID = 27DC

  7. Once you have obtained both the IDs, proceed to PCI Database. There you can either search for the vendor from the vendor ID or directly get information about the device along with the vendor name by searching with the device ID.

4 free wireless network scanners

If you are out with your laptop or smartphone and need to find an Internet connection, the first thing you will require is a good Wi-Fi scanner. Checkout these 4 free options you’ve got.
1. NetStumbler is one of oldest wireless scanner for Windows. It runs on Windows 2000 and Windows XP 32 bit. The 64 bit version of Windows XP has trouble running this tool and it refuses to run on Windows Vista or 7. NetStumbler can help you locate wireless networks in your neighborhood and also detect unauthorized access points.

Netstumbler
The program is commonly used for:
  • Wardriving
  • Verifying network configurations
  • Finding locations with poor coverage in a WLAN
  • Detecting causes of wireless interference
  • Detecting unauthorized ("rogue") access points
  • Aiming directional antennas for long-haul WLAN links
NetStumbler was last released in April 2004, and since then no new releases has been seen which is one reason why this tool does not work in Windows Vista. This project is literally dead.
If you would still like to use NetStumbler, then use it with Earth Stumbler that can take the GPS-tagged Netstumbler information and map it on Google Earth.
2. outSSIDer is a free Windows software that scans your neighborhood for open, unencrypted WiFi networks so that you can surf for free. Whenever it finds one it alerts you and then tries to connect to it automatically. All you have to do is run outSSIDer, close the laptop lid and start walking around the streets.
outsider-stop
When it detects an unencrypted wireless connection it alerts you with a sound. As the signal gets better you get a repeated ding-ding-ding sound, which means that you should stop and wait to allow the program to connect to the network. Once it successfully connects to the network you get a different tone notifying you of the success. This tool was reviewed earlier this month.
3. Vistumbler is an open source Wi-Fi scanner for Windows Vista and Windows 7. Vistumbler uses the Vista command 'netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid' to get wireless information, and then maps the Wi-Fi hotspots found into a map.
vistumbler
Features:
  • GPS Support
  • Export/Import access points from Vistumbler or Netstumbler
  • Export access point GPS locations to a Google Earth kml file or GPX
  • Live Google Earth Tracking
  • Speaks Signal Strength using sound files
4. inSSIDer is another open source wireless network scanner for Windows XP and Windows Vista that uses Windows Native WiFi API to get wireless information. inSSIDer helps find Wi-Fi access points and track the strength of received signal over time, highlighting the access points with higher Wi-Fi concentration. It allows exporting of Wi-Fi and GPS data to a KML file for viewing in Google Earth.

How to remove watermark from an image or picture

A watermark is any recognizable text, logo or pattern that appears over an image to identify the owner of the image and generally used to prevent unauthorized reuse of the image. Watermarks are usually transparent and can be difficult to remove. The difficulty or ease of removal depends on the content of the image and the position, color, size etc of the watermark.

There are several resources out there that teaches you how to remove watermark from pictures, but most of them are old. Although these guides are still relevant, in light of some new tools that has recently become available in our hands, I decided a new guide was necessary. Hence this tutorial.

Removing water mark using Photoshop CS5

The new iteration of Photoshop, Creative Suite 5 or CS5 in short, includes some handy tools that really helps in such tasks as removing watermarks. You must have already heard because we wrote about this tool on Instant Fundas. It’s called Content Aware Fill.
For our example we will use an image from iStockPhoto and try to remove the watermark right across the face of the image.
Disclaimer: The use of materials from iStockphoto is for illustrative purposes only. We do not encourage stealing of copyrighted images from iStockphoto or from any other sources.
istockphoto
Open the image in Photoshop CS5, and select the “Spot Healing Brush Tool” from the toolbar. You can also press J to select it.
PS-1
Select the option Content Aware Fill on the toolbar at the top.
ps-4
Press [ or ] to increase or decrease the size of the brush as required, and carefully paint it over the watermark.
PS-3
Release it, and the line is gone.
ps-5
If the result is unsatisfactory, undo it or go back in History and repeat. Use the smallest brush size as possible to get good results.
For larger areas we will use the lasso tool. Select the watermark to remove using the Lasso Tool (L). Notice that I selected only a part of the watermark. This is because the image behind the watermark is not uniform. To get the best results work with small areas of the watermark. In this example, I left out the horn of the skull since it has a different texture.
ps-6
Now press D. Make sure “Content Aware” is selected under “Use” and press OK.
ps-7
Remember, you can always undo and repeat the steps. Here is the final result with the complete watermark removed. Not perfect but passable.
istockphoto-ps5

Removing water mark using GIMP

GIMP too has a Content Aware Fill type feature which can be added to the software using plug-ins.
Download the Resynthesizer plugin and copy the executable called resynthesizer.exe to gimp-2.0\lib\gimp\plug-ins\ directory.
Download this script (from Newslily) and copy it to
gimp-2.0\share\gimp\scripts\
Restart GIMP to reload the scripts.
Open the image on GIMP and using the lasso tool to select the watermark. Again notice that I’m doing this by selecting smaller chunks of area and not the entire logo.
gimp-1
Now click on Filters>Enhance>Heal Selection.
gimp-2
Specify the radius to take the selection from. The default is 50 and should work fine. If it doesn’t, play around with the radius until you get the desired result. Once the heal is applied, the watermark should be gone.
gimp-3
Carry on with the rest of the image carefully selecting the areas to remove. This is the final result. Not bad, right?
istockphoto2

So which is better: GIMP or Photoshop?

Neither is perfect and both performs similarly. Sometimes GIMP gives better control as you have the option to specify the cloning radius. On the other hand, Photoshop gives you the option of different modes – Multiply, darken, etc. The Spot Healing Brush tool is also easier to operate on tiny areas than the lasso tool.
Use which ever you are comfortable working with.

Windows Registry Guide

Back when PC Tools, the makers of such popular software titles like Registry Mechanic and Spyware Doctor, were called WinGuides, they used to provide a free ebook called Windows Registry Guide. It was the most comprehensive guide to the Windows Registry and the best part was - it was searchable.

When WinGuides became PC Tools, they discontinued the guide but luckily I had a copy. It’s the best, the most powerful guide on Registry I have ever read. It has helped me on numerous occasion to find little forgotten tweaks without the need to hunt them on Google. It’s too good to keep it to myself. So I have decided to share this little gem with you.

Before I give you the download link (it’s at the bottom), let’s take a look what’s inside.

The opening page of the guide displays six categories into which all tricks and tweaks are organized – Hardware, Software, Network, Tips and Tricks, Security and Windows.

 winguides

Each of these categories are further broken down into smaller sections. You can click any of the categories and explore various Registry settings and optimization tricks, or you can search. Let’s search “taskbar” to find all available Registry tricks associated with the taskbar. As you can see there are quite a lot.

winguides-search

Now let’s pick one called “Change taskbar group size in Windows XP” and immediately we can see the steps required to activate it, with screenshots. The ‘related tweaks’ takes you to other similar tweaks.

With this in hand you are soon going to be called the Registry Guru. Interested? Download here.

Why Python Is Good ?

      In brief, his reasons are:
  • “Python has built-in modern data structures.” (Unlike, ahem, Perl.)
  • “Readability counts.” (Python is compact, expressive, and enforces good formatting of code.)
  • “Scriptability.” (Python can replace the complexity of shell scripts, make files, and compiled programs.)
  • “Python is ecumenical.” (You can write object-oriented or procedural code, depending on your needs).
  • “Interpretation is back in style.” (Python runs as fast as much compiled code without having to go through the compiling cycle.)
  • If you “really need the speed,” you can write a plug-in module in a fast language such as C and execute the module from Python.
  • “Python has powerful math libraries” (numpy, matplotlib, and other scentific libraries).

HOW TO LOGIN MORE THAN ONE ACCOUNT ON SAME BROWSER

HOW TO LOGIN MORE THAN ONE ACCOUNT ON SAME BROWSER

If you have got two or even multiple Facebook accounts you might be at loss at how to open and manage them at the same time on the same computer and from the same browser such as Internet Explorer,Google Chrome or Firefox!

Normally Facebook doesn’t allow you to use two accounts on the same browser, for example. But thanks to a nice workaround you will be able to trick Facebook into thinking that you are using only a profile!

Firefox
Edited Mozilla Firefox

Right-click Firefox icon on your desktop.
Click Properties.
At the end of  the Firefox Target, add the following code at the end of tha path: -profilemanager -no-remote . You will get something like this: “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe” -profilemanager -no-remote
Click OK.
Next time you will open Firefox, you will get a new box. Right there you will be able to create and open new accounts, as many as you wish!
If the above procedure doesn’t work for you you can try this other one:

Open Firefox.
Download and install Multi-Fox addon. Such extension will let you access different websites with different usernames, simultaneously!
After you have installed the extension, restart Firefox.
Now in the context menus of links and bookmarks (Open in a New IdentityProfile) and in File menu (New Identity Profile). Click one of the two option and you will be able to Manage two Facebook accounts at the same time!

Google Chrome

In Google Chrome, thanks to the Incognito mode, opening multiple Facebook pages should be even easier!
Open Chrome.
Login the first Facebook account on Chrome.
Now, click Ctrl + Shift + N to open an  Incognito window.
Go to Facebook.com and login with a different account.
The last trick is use different browsers at the same time. So if you have Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer, for example, open them and launch facebook.com. Right after that, for each browser login to a Facebook profile.
